“Oh, get over it, Sam! It’s a car. Inanimate object. Calm down.” She rolled her eyes at him. “Whatever, Sam. Why does it even matter? We just spent two weeks together, excuse me for wanting a little space! God forbid!” She glared. “You know what.. Never mind. It’s not a big deal at all. I don’t care any more.” She muttered. Rachel was getting more frustrated and upset than angry now. She was clearly on the verge of tears as he spoke his last sentence.
“I don’t believe that at all, Sam. Because when you want to be, you can surprisingly be a really nice guy. Tell anyone I said that, and I’ll deny it. But anyway, the guy I spent my winter break with is not the guy standing in front of me right now.” She said bitterly. She didn’t know what came over her. Rachel guessed she was just tired of Sam acting like an asshole when she knew he could be a decent human being. Rachel continued blinking back tears. This was happening way too often, and every time it did, Rachel felt weaker and weaker. It wasn’t a feeling she enjoyed.
“If you want space then why are you here?” He asked her, because now he was confused. She wanted, space she didn’t care.. but she was standing here because..? He’d spent two weeks with her so he knew by now when she was on the verge of tears, he didn’t do crying well. His face kind of scrunched up letting her know he was feeling uncomfortable by all of this. Maybe, if they hadn’t been fighting he would have gave her an awkward pat on the back or something. During break when she’d cry, sometimes he’d ignore it, but other times he’d hug her, which was kind of what he wanted to do now. ‘No, stop thinking like that.’ He said to himself as he looked at her snapping out of out. ”I’m the same person I was then that I am now. I didn’t just walk into school and do a complete one eighty, this is who I am.”
Nonetheless, she stayed quiet, nodding politely at Brittany. She waited until the blonde was gone before saying anything else. “Yes, I am.” She retorted. “I’m sorry I didn’t want to go check on a damn car! And it’s not even like we hang around the same group of friends anyway! You’re the one who let every one go ahead and assume Puck’s the father!” She yelled.
“And everything you said to Puck was completely inappropriate! If he hadn’t stopped me, I would have punched the stupid grin off your face! God. I don’t know why I expected you to change. You’re never going to stop being an ass, are you?” She shot at him.
“It’s not a damn car!” Sam said seriously horrified that she’d even call it that. “It’s like my..” he resisted using the word baby, as the topic of anything baby related he was currently trying to erase from his mind. “Favorite thing, it’s like my favorite thing okay, sorry if I wanted to make sure no one hurt her.” He said moving to sit on the edge of his bed finding no point in standing. “That’s not true, we have some of the same friends…Mike Chang, he’s everyone’s friend.” Sam said pleased with his answer. “I didn’t do anything.” Sam said defensively, “Just letting people think what they want, why does it matter who the father is anyways?” Of course he didn’t like people thinking the baby was Pucks, but Puck was better at this whole pretending to be the father and taking care of Rachel thing, then Sam the actual Father would ever be.
Sam couldn’t help but grin slightly when she mentioned what he had said to Puck was completely inappropriate. “Well it’s not like it wasn’t true, come on Rachel I was joking, It’s not my fault he can’t take a joke..” Sam said his face dropping slightly when she said her last bit. He’d planned on coming back from break and things being different, he didn’t mean to fall back into the same patterns, but it was so easy to just ignore it then go with it. “Well I don’t know what you want me to do Rachel, but this, it’s just who I am.”
A few days passed since Puck and Sam’s ‘fight’ and Sam had not lightened up. In fact, Puck refused to speak to Sam, and vice versa. Puck had made a habit of staying over at her dorm. It was actually okay, because Rachel found her replacement pillow, since Sam was being dicktastic. Over the past few days, Rachel had been thinking about Sam’s behavior, and she needed to know why he was being such an ass. Rachel left her last class, and went to Sam and Puck’s. Once she got there, she slammed her fist on the door repeatedly. “Sam! I know you’re in there. Open the door!” She shouted, not caring that she was attracting attention. She knew the bastard was in there. She also knew he wouldn’t have a clue as to why he was there. But she didn’t care in the least. He’d find out.
Once the door opened, she walked in, and faced him. “What is your problem? Dear god! The moment we got into the common rooms, you went back to being the biggest asshole on the face of the fucking planet!” She shouted. “Do you enjoy pissing people off to the point of fighting? Because it looks like you do.” She started to pace, and continued rambling on for a moment before she finally stopped, and faced him, her arms crossed against her chest carefully, trying to avoid the broken rib. “Well? Say something!” She said. Rachel was way past the point of patience with him. Sam needed a real attitude check or something. And honestly, the way Sam treated her in that short amount of time sent Rachel over the edge. She wanted answers and she wanted them now.
He was confused when he heard banging on the door, Puck was rarely ever here and he had a key. He knew Puck and Rachel were spending time together, he shouldn’t care about any of this but he did, and that bugged him. Why did he have to care about what Rachel did? The banging continued so he got up pulling open the door, not expecting her to go all hormonal pregnant chick on him.
“You need to be quite.” Sam said finally looking around the room, and in a hush whispered quickly whisper he told her why. “Brittany’s in the bathroom and I’d rather her not accidently overhear this whole thing.” He felt no point in hiding from her what and who was he doing moments before. Once Brittany emerged from the bathroom already on her way out, Sam saw her give him a confused look. “Study partners.” He said motioning between him and Rachel, then rather quickly he usher Brittany out the door with a promise of texting her later, although he had no intentions of doing so.
“Hold on.” Sam said once she was gone finally realizing what Rachel had said to him moments before. “You are really going to put this on me? I’m the asshole? One second you’re behind me and the next your on the other side of the room getting cozy with Puck, sorry if I thought we were just going to go with acting as if winter break didn’t happen.” He said flatly.
Rachel was getting tired of this. Sam always had to start stuff. And all of it made Rachel want to smack the stupid grin off his face. Maybe punch him. He knew how good her punches were. Mentioning adoption again made Rachel forget any snarky comeback she had. They’d talked about it over the break, how they would make a decision about keeping her or giving her away. But that was also before Sam was being an ass about everything. She snapped back to reality when she saw things heating up between Puck and Sam. Sam was seriously pushing Puck’s buttons. Her jaw dropped again when he brought up their sleeping together. Puck had made sure Rachel was out of the way, before his fist swung around and hit Sam square in the jaw.
Sam hadn’t been expecting Puck to be so easy to bait, and he had surely not expected Puck to hit him in the middle of the common room. “What, the fuck.” Sam said touching his jaw in the spot Puck had just hit, he glared at him for a moment. Sam should have just walked away, if he was bigger person he would have done so. Puck hit him once and got away with it, but there was no way he was letting it go a second time. He bawled his hands into fists throwing them full force at Puck, and smiled when he made contact to Pucks nose. “I hope you two are happy together.” Sam said before storming off to go meet Santana or something.
Rachel would have rolled her eyes at Sam again, but that was starting to get repetitive. She settled with gritting her teeth. “Whatever, Sam.” She spat. “Like you would know what’s good for the baby. Smoking in the car when I’m clearly pregnant, and with a broken rib. That could have caused me to cough, and I don’t know if you know this, Sam, but coughing with a broken rib is fucking painful.” She said bitterly, still not over the fact he’d smoked while she was stuck in a car with him. Puck raised an eyebrow, and glared at Sam. “Dude, what is wrong with you? That shit’s not good for the kid. That could cause like.. major fuckin’ mutations. Secondhand smoke is like worse than first hand smoke I heard somewhere.” He shrugged.
“Okay, can everyone just let that go?” Sam asked, clearly that had been one of his finer moments. “I doesn’t matter whats good for the baby, you’re not keeping it, if there’s a problem it’s someone else’s problem to deal with.” He said as if that explained his actions, he had been tired, cranky, and not thinking straight. “What’s wrong with me?” Sam repeated not resisting the urge to roll his eyes at Puck. “What’s wrong with you? I don’t know where you got the idea that you and Rachel were some kind of couple.” He said using air quotes on the last word. “I mean, I bet she didn’t even tell you we slept with each other every night over break.” He said being sure to use his words carefully.
Glaring at Sam, Rachel shook her head. “You did not. You didn’t say anything about that.” She retorted. She was starting to get frustrated, and extremely pissed off. She began to move toward Sam, fully intending on smacking him.. again.. But Puck’s arm stayed firmly around her shoulders. “Calm down, Rach.” He said quietly. Rachel didn’t calm down, but she refrained from smacking him in front of everyone that was there. He was clearly trying to push Puck, make him mad. But really, it was just pissing Rachel off. She knew Puck and Sam were roommates, and hoped that later, Puck would punch him in the face again or something.
“Huh.” Sam said pretending to think back to that night, not that he really remembered much of it expect for her threw her out after, Rachel liked to bring up a lot. “I thought I mentioned something about that.” He said shrugging as if it was no big deal, which it wasn’t to him, Puck’s reaction had been sub par from what he was expecting. “Yeah you should listen to him Rachel, all this anger can’t be good for the baby.” He said his eyes drifting towards her stomach, it was weird to think that the past two weeks he fell asleep with his hand on that stomach almost every night.
Rachel rolled her eyes at Sam. Yep. He was back to his asshole ways. She had to admit, she was sort of disappointed in him, but she didn’t know what she’d expected out of Sam. She couldn’t have expected him to change. It was kind of a tall order there. “So what if we are cozy? There’s nothing wrong with that.” She shot at him. She normally would have felt bad for being so bitchy, but with the way Sam was acting, he deserved it, and she could always blame the pregnancy hormones. “Whatever, Sam. It’s clear who the better guy is here.” She said, hoping to make him mad. She felt Puck stand up a little bit straighter. “Wait, what?” He asked Sam, a glare on his face too. “You two fucked in my bed?” He asked. Rachel’s jaw dropped. She had no clue. She forgot Puck and Sam were even roommates. “That’s some messed up shit, dude.” Puck told Sam.
Sam rolled his eyes at Rachel, what did she see in Puck? He didn’t understand it at all. Puck was.. boring, and that stupid Mohawk, it made him look like a child.. Or at least that was what Sam thought. “Oh yeah, that time we did it, that was Puck’s bed.” Sam said clearing that up for Rachel. “I told you it was my roommates bed, you didn’t see to have a problem with it.” Sam said smirking at Puck. “I hope you change your sheets often..” He added clearly enjoying himself as he smiled at Puck.
Rachel raised an eyebrow questionably when Sam walked toward them. She couldn’t explain the feeling she got when Sam wrapped his arm around Santana and kissed her. It couldn’t be jealousy. No. Rachel didn’t do jealousy. She wasn’t big on emotions. At least, not before she got pregnant that is. But something about that made her want to punch both of them. But she refrained, and just leaned into Puck a little more. When Santana commented, saying Puck was the one who knocked her up, neither of them said anything. She was shocked that Puck was just going with it. She wasn’t shocked Sam didn’t step up and say anything. She knew from the moment they got back, that it would be like their winter break never happened. Which actually kind of sucked. She grew to like the Sam she had spent the past two weeks with. But he was clearly gone. And Rachel knew he would be. That being the case, she just leaned into Puck who still had an arm around her. Once Santana was gone, it was Puck, Sam and Rachel.
“I don’t see how that’s any of your business.” Rachel muttered bitterly. She glared at Sam. “So you’re just going to let people assume that Puck’s the father?” She asked Sam quietly, so no one could hear. Puck just shrugged next to her. “People can assume what they want. It doesn’t matter to me what they all think.”
Sam was glad he had clearly struck a nerve with Rachel. “Sorry, you two just looked cozy over here, I thought I’d see what was going on.” He apparent dislike of Puck clear. He rolled his eyes at Rachel’s comment, if he spent to much time over here surely people were going to start talking or something. He did feel kind of bad for treating Rachel like this, but it was better for both of this way… Or at least that’s what he told himself. “Well Puck here seem’s pretty content with that idea… So why not? I mean the baby was convinced on his bed.. so that has to count for something?” He said smirking in Puck’s direction.
This was it. They’d made it through the holidays, and school would be starting back up soon. Rachel wasn’t ready for all of this. Once she walked into the common room, she was positively going to be bombarded with questions and whispers and rumors on who the father was. She’d never gotten so involved with the school’s gossip train, but she knew how rumors spread around. It was like a wildfire. The moment they arrived back to school, Sam rushed to his car, Rachel rolling her eyes. They’d previously dropped all of their stuff off in their rooms, and Rachel was meeting Puck in the common room, which probably wasn’t the greatest plan. She walked behind Sam for awhile, and then wandered off to find Puck. Once she did find him, she stayed next to him. “How was your break?” He’d asked. “It was okay.. I mean, my dads weren’t too thrilled about the pregnancy, obviously, and I’m pretty sure daddy is never going to speak to me again.. But dad seems to have come around. We stayed at Sam’s, and the baby kicked me in the rib, and broke it.” “Shit, Rach, you okay? Is the baby okay?” “The baby is fine, thanks, I’m fine too. I have pain medication.” She looked around at the people staring at her.
She continued talking to Puck, her gaze meeting Sam’s briefly, then looking away. Everyone was staring at her. And though they all thought she couldn’t hear, she could hear whispers. “God, she’s such a slut, we should have seen this coming.” “She’s spending a lot of time around Puck.. I bet he’s the baby daddy..” Rachel just tried not to cry in front of god and everyone in the middle of the common room. Puck noticed how upset she looked, and put his arm around her. When Santana approached her, she was somewhat relieved, but not much. Santana was definitely one of her good friends, but she had an attitude. “I had a great winter break, San, thanks for asking.” She paused at the second part of her question. Oh god, everyone thought Puck was the father of the baby, didn’t they? She looked around again, everyone judging her. “I actually didn’t spend my winter break with Puck. I went to my fathers home for the holidays.” She said, clearing up any confusion. She tried not to look at Sam across the room, but it was nearly impossible. It was as if he were purposely standing in her direct line of vision.
Sam glanced over at Rachel and Puck his hands balling into fists when he saw Puck put his arm around her. He quickly dropped his balled fists, unsure of what had just come over him. He didn’t like Rachel, not like that maybe he was just used to having her around him or something. Whatever it was, he didn’t like watching Rachel standing over there with Puck. Santana was over there, which gave him a reason to go over there without looking as if he was solely going over there to interrupt Puck and Rachel.
He approached Rachel, Puck, and Santana slinking his arm around Santana’s waist. “I was wondering where you ran off to.” He said ignoring Rachel and Puck as he pulled Santana closer to him pressing his lips against hers. “Oh, I didn’t see you two there.” He said once he pulled away from her, clearly Rachel was playing some sort of a game and he could play this too. “Puck, Rachel. Have a good winter break?” He asked the question directed at Puck as he knew how Rachel’s break was. “Puck got Rachel pregnant.” Santana said smugly, which caused Sam’s face to drop and then regain composer. “Oh.” Was all he said to her looking between Puck and Rachel, probably the only people in the school who actually knew that Sam was the father. He wondered why Puck didn’t say anything, if it was the other way around Sam would most likely have done so. Santana seemed bored of this conversation and placed a kiss on Sam’s cheek. “Meet me in my dorm in 15.” She said grinning, “Nice talking to you tubers, daddy to be.” She said nodding at Puck, before walking away. “So, what are you two doing?” Sam asked eyeing between them.
The holidays were over which meant it was time to head back to school. Sam had actually been dreading this, there was no way to hide Rachel’s pregnancy now and it would only be a matter of time before it was linked back to Sam. The first thing he did once back at school was check on his car. He was after all a guy, and as far as he was concerned that black ranger rover was his baby. After checking and making sure everything was in order, it was time to get back to dorms, to the common area where he knew everyone would be. His friends, the same ones he had ditched this winter break. They had made plans to go to Finn’s parents Skii house in Colorado, Sam had of course backed out last minute due to Rachel pregnancy family shit. It wasn’t as if they needed him there for the company, Sam was just there connection to Alcohol and anything else they might need, so needless to say the guys were pissed but approaching them they seemed to be over it, clearly still sporting hangovers as they just grunted as greeting towards him.
He would never admit it, but his winter break wasn’t all that bad, spending time with Rachel when it was good he actually…. enjoyed it? No. He didn’t know where she had gone off to, one second she was behind him and the next she was going off somewhere, maybe she had told him where, he wasn’t exactly paying attention. “Did you hear about Rachel?” Finn asked looking as if he had some interesting gossip to share. Sam pretended not to know what Finn was talking about as his eyes drifted across the room to where Rachel had vanished off to, she was standing next to Puck looking kind of uncomfortable. “What about her?” Sam asked forcing himself to take his off Puck and Rachel to concentrate on what Finn was saying. “I don’t know if your blind or something, but she’s fucking pregnant..” Finn said looking at Sam confused. “Such a slut..” Mike chimed in shaking his head. Sam nodded in agreement. “Yeah… a slut.. ” He said wondering what Rachel and Puck were talking about. “I heard it’s Pucks kid.” Brittany said joining in on there conversation. “Puck’s kid..” Sam said, “You really think Puck has it in him?” They seemed to just ignore Sam, there conversation on how Rachel was a slut until finally Santana, who was actually friends with Rachel went over to her. “So you have a good winter break tubbers?” She asked a smirk playing across her lips. “It’s clear what you two were doing.” She said meaning Rachel and Puck.
